As a Senior Specialist Solutions Architect – Builder Team, this role designs, builds, maintains, and supports projects that integrate and extend the Databricks platform to accelerate data and AI use cases. The position contributes to the roadmap for specific priority projects, helps evaluate partner solutions, and delivers high-quality, production-ready implementations. This role also supports the infrastructure used to maintain Databricks Labs, enabling field engineering teams to contribute to tooling efforts more effectively. The ideal candidate brings strong customer empathy, a product mindset, and the ability to translate tooling needs into robust backend systems. The impact you will have Build, debug, and extend multiple internal and public infrastructure components of the Databricks Labs ecosystem, with a focus on scalable and reliable backend services and automation. Implement and maintain backend services, APIs, and automation tools that integrate with the Databricks platform and related ecosystems. Author high-quality technical documentation, design proposals, and internal guides to scale knowledge and best practices across the organization. Apply and contribute to engineering best practices, coding standards, and reusable patterns for Labs projects, ensuring consistent and maintainable solution delivery. Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Field Engineering, Product, and Platform Engineering—to clarify requirements, propose technical approaches, and deliver projects Contribute to the evaluation, adoption, and integration of new technologies relevant to Databricks Labs and the automation tooling ecosystem. Own the design and implementation of small to medium-sized projects end to end, and partner with Lead Specialist Solutions Architects on larger, cross-team initiatives. Participate in code reviews, design reviews, and incident response, helping improve reliability, observability, and developer experience for field teams.
What we look for
Experience delivering complex backend or infrastructure projects in iterative increments, balancing robustness and development speed. Production experience of 6+ years in backend or infrastructure development, with proficiency in at least two of the following: Terraform, Scala, Go, Apache Spark, Java, Python; experience with at least one compiled language is required. Passion for defensive programming and building highly scalable and reliable software. Demonstrated fluency in modern AI and data technologies and proven experience integrating AI capabilities into production systems, such as embedding LLMs, recommendation models, or other ML services into backend applications with appropriate reliability, observability, and security controls. BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a track record of producing clear technical documentation, design proposals, and knowledge-sharing materials across teams.
